Sir Martin,
I have seen this dragon a million times and know exactly where it is located. I have also photographed it on numerous occasions. I've heard the same thing as you. I've noticed that the adults do not enter because of the childish ride image, nor do the little ones due to it being a bit scary. That leaves the hormone filled adolescents to enter to discover and explore.
Other than that my friend, I too wonder.

I haven't seen much activity at the dragon over the past few seasons though. I know because I have stopped at the Horn Shoppe next door to it. Not the little devil horns, but the large blowing/drinking horns. Unless I am horribly mistaken, I believe the Horn Shoppe is next door.

Sir Martin,
Speaking of shoppes, there used to be a custom pipe shoppe near the Falconer Stage. Do you know if it still exists? I did not see it during my visit in the 2007 season.
They had beautiful old world pipes in which I believe they carved themselves. I meant to buy one for a dear friend who is a true tobacco pipe smoker, and would have really enjoyed having such a conversation piece.
Sir Martin
01-16-2008, 03:45 PM
You might be thinking of a shoppe called "Blue - the Pipe Maker". I don't smoke and didn't go inside, but I noticed that Kat started working there this season. She worked the past few seasons at The Scarlet Leather shoppe, so I was surprised to see her at her new job. She's kinda hard to miss (she's one of the ladies in the infamous ice cream photo). ;)
One of the MIL shoppes might possibly sell pipes. Next season take a look in Rose-N-Thistle or Noble House and see if they have any pipes amongst their other finery.
Here is Kat outside Blue - the Pipe Maker's shoppe. A small portion of the shoppe is visible on the right side of the picture.

Ah, Yes! I remember the infamous ice cream photos! We had fun on that thread.
That may very well be the shoppe I am seeking. I will look out for it next time.
I will check the other shops you mentioned as well. I knew I went to the right source. Thanks.
Of course some ice cream wouldn't be bad either.

This picture was taken by Troy, (Rev's wife) at Rev's Armour Werks. They made that pouch I have on my right hip. It's not always that big, but Rev put in an extra leather section so that it can expand like an accordion if I have a bunch of stuff in it. If it isn't so full, it collapses. Rev and Troy are really nice folks and their shoppe is near the blacksmith and glassblower at TRF. I look really pale . . . maybe shouldn't have used the flash. :D

I don't think this actress is still on cast at TRF, but she was very delightful (sorry ... don't know her name). She was in the French court and would pretend to be hiding behind that scraggly limb she carried around. I should have taken the photo at another time or in the shade as she couldn't keep her eyes open in the bright sun. Still, she was really cute and excellent at interacting with patrons.

I'm not sure what the price range is, but I've decided to stop by and take a closer look this next season. I have an old bullhorn that my dad got me in Monterrey, Mexico when I was 9 years old. It still blows great, so I know they will last for many years if you take care of them. You might be able to make out on the sign that they sell "Drinking, Blowing & Combination Horns". I'm really curious as to how they make a horn that holds wine (or whatever you wish to put in) and still is able to bellow.

OK ... I had to go to some web sites to figure this out. It looks like I had a misconception about the drinking horns. For some reason, I thought that the drinking horns were also used for carrying wine, water etc., like a flask. Apparently you just plug the mouthpiece end and enjoy your favorite beverage out of it, not carry the beverage around with you all day. Duh . . . :o
Here are a few links to sites that carry the horns:

I agree they are pricey but very nice. It might not help much, but the actual prices will be about 10% lower than what you see. The prices listed are in Australian dollars which equal about 90 cents in the USA. The 10 percent less might help with shipping.

Yes, TRF has an exceptional fae cast and their costumes are beautiful. I had some family in for the last weekend of TRF and it was a shame because the fae were so chilled they had to wrap themselves in blankets and my nephew and nieces couldn't see all of the beautiful colors. At least I was able to send them some pictures of other weekends when it wasn't so cold.

Don't you hate it when that happens?
I agree. TRF has the most beautiful fae and realistic costumes.

KING HENRY DID AN INTERVIEW IN I THINK ZEST AND AT ONE TIME THEY SAID HIS COSTUME WAS WORTH $5000.00 DOLLARS AND I CAN SEE WHY I WISH THAT I COULD AFFORD THE MATERIAL I LOVE HIS AND KATHERINES COSTUMES

Yes, the TRF cast has very nice garb. It wouldn't surprise me if his was $5000 or more. That makes a lot more sense to me than the actresses who wear $10,000 and more gowns to the Hollywood awards shows. I realize most of them don't own the dresses they wear but whoever eventually ends up with it probably doesn't wear it more than once or twice.

Speaking of Hollywood, you need to see The Tudors on Showtime to see some awesome period garb.
I watch it for the show itself, but one it's selling points is the cast and the costumes. New season starts 3/30/08.

I too had to recall my history.
Nevertheless, a great storyline and period piece.

It's been a couple years, but I believe this is R/F forum member Ryk along with his wife. I believe they live in north or northeast Texas and attend Scarby more than TRF.

When we were in The Dragonslayer 2 or 3 years ago, Tessa and I were behind a husband and wife who were looking over the tankards. While waiting our turn, Tessa asked if we could get a photo of their adorably garbed daughter with her. So here's a picture of my faire maiden along with another young princess.

R/F forum members Tessa, Captain Bacardi, The Other Boleyn Girl and Anna Iram. FYI: The Other Boleyn Girl is her forum name, but she on cast and portrays Catherine Cromwell at TRF. This talented lady is also the assistant entertainment director at TRF and one of the nicest people you could ever meet.

You where looking for photos of years past at the festival. Go to the photo gallery where I have uploaded several that we received from the 1978 Texas Renaissance Festival. Look at the Globe Stage when it was still quite new:

Paul gave these to me to scan and upload. We will try to add more from early years as we have time to scan them.

Chris - those are wonderful photos ... it will be great to see some more whenever you get the chance to scan them. A few observations:
1) Did anyone notice that the vast majority of folks in the pics from 30 years ago had slender to average builds? We hear all the time how a third of our population is overweight/obese and you can tell the average person in 1978 just wasn't as large as they are now. And before anyone thinks I'm being too critical, let me tell you that I weigh 20 pounds more than when I graduated from high school. ;)
2) In the large version of this picture from 2003, that really looks like Kat behind the fellows in the armor. It looks like the photo is in front of Lord Entropy's shoppe.

3) Uhmmm ... anyone notice that the sheik on the left side of this picture appears to be enjoying a Michelob? You won't see vendors drinking on the job (at least not this blatantly) any more. :)

I am stunned. At the memories those pics bring back, and at how much TRF has changed over the decades. It almost makes me want the old faire back, except that I like having flush privies now. :D
wow
I do still miss the may pole. and the dead cart. and the battle mound. but that's just me.
Thank you Chris, and thank you Paul for sharing those. If you have any time, I would greatly appreciate seeing more pics like those.

Good eye Sir Martin. That pic was taken at Lord Entropy's Castle. That's my friend getting a taste of Entropy's armor. He used to rag on me for spending so much on my Entropy armor/Ren Faires stuff but when I finally got him to go to faire with me, he dropped about 600.00 with Entropy for his outfit..lol
And that is Kat behind him. I always enjoy seeing her at TRF. :D

Wow!!! Great photos, Chris!! It's really cool to see how the place looked in the early years.
And to think that I could have been there (I believe I had my own vehicle in '78) if only I had been a little more open minded back then. Oh well, live and learn.
Thanks to Paul for sharing these and to you for posting them.

Can you believe how much it has changed? But it HAS been 30 years and no living organism doesn't change over a period of time.

Does anyone know where this "Odeon" stage was on the faire grounds? As far as I know, The Players Podium existed where the current Odeon stage is from (at least) 1982 through 1999. Was the original Odeon stage (it looked brand new in the 1978 photo) in this same spot?

They have a German one now, but I haven't seen any beers hanging off the trees and bushes as of yet.

kinda the same category as the money tree, man, imagine a garden with half and half, half money trees and half beer trees, boy, back in the day. Come to think of it, if i had all the money back i have used to climb "beer trees", i coulda bought a palacial gardens. DANG! bad sides to all.

If I'm not mistaken, the area where the "Agora" stage is currently located was called "The King's Beer Garden" back in '89 and for quite a few years after that. As far as a "mud dragon" goes, I'm not sure about that one.

well, to clarify, the "mud dragon" was more of a sight thing, in a mud piut outside in the walking area, a bit actor would build it out of the mud pit, carved, and then build sort of a fire in his mouth, coal type, where it appeared to smoke, and put like rubies in its eyes, that sort of thing, any jogged memories out there?
i love trf
