Hello Dianne,
Would you be willing to post a picture? I am not an devout collector, but from time to time, I like to add to my collection.
Also, there is quite the stein expert/collector in this Forum's member list.

I actually got in touch with Dianne a couple days ago regarding this message. While acknowledging that I am not a moderator here, I humbly advised her that this post is almost certainly in violation of forum rules (I wasn't chastising, just letting her know that there were rules against advertising and certainly against posting products that compete with MIL).
http://www.dragonsquest.com/site/policies/forumrules.htm
She responded very politely that she was new and didn't know she could not post advertisements for MIL products. She even sent me a picture of the tankard and had been misinformed as to the year of issue. What she actually has is a 1980/81 ceramic tankard, so it would be a disappointment for anyone who thought she might be in possession of a Dragon Tooth.

And it is also an excellent example of supply and demand. I was collecting TRF tankards for several years before I found mine. As with most of these beauties, it is better to purchase them the year of issue rather than waiting. :o

Sir Martin, good call. I agree.
I did not intend for her, or anyone, to violate the MIL Forum rules. Simply curious to see a picture.
Also, interesting observation. As I said, there is quite the expert on this forum base.

I guess I kind of lucked into my Dragon Tooth. 1988 was the first year that I ever attended TRF and while searching for a tankard, the Dragon Tooth just caught my eye. To me, it was the best looking tankard being sold so I bought one.
Unfortunately, I didn't notice until after I got home that it had a hairline crack in it. Last year while purchasing my latest tankard, I told Dakota about it and she told me that it probably wouldn't take much off of it's value. (not that I would ever sell it)
Sir Martin

Norberto - thanks for the kind words. I appreciate ya.
Nunyafb - Since most people would not actually drink out of their Dragon Tooth, I doubt a hairline crack would make much difference. I can assure you there are many people who wish they had yours.
That reminds me of something interesting I heard a few years ago from a fellow who used to work for MIL ... he said that some tankards with unusual characteristics are actually sold for more than the standard models. I guess it's kinda like the coins and stamps that have something different about them that makes them more valuable. I could kick myself for passing up an unusual item a while back that I could have had for a very low price. It was the 1985 "Wizard's Crystal Ball" tankard, but instead of having the regular midnight blue background, the background was white. I was told that it would sell for more than the regular one.

I actually drank out of mine during my visit that day and probably a couple of times since then, but a few years ago when I found out it's value, any thought of drinking out of it went right out the window.
That "Wizard's Crystal Ball" tankard sounds interesting. I guess a collector should go to more garage sales and antique/resale shops and keep their eyes peeled. You never know what you might find.

Where could one find a Dragon Tooth?
If I'm not mistaken, I think that whenever someone sells one back to Dragonslayer, they will put it out front for sale. I guess you could give them a call and check for availability. I'm also pretty sure that I've read elsewhere on this forum about someone seeing some sold on eBay. Garage sales and resale shops would also be another possibility. I think it would be pretty cool to find one in a garage sale for a couple of bucks.

Here in Rosenberg, almost all of the old stores in downtown have become antique/resale shops. I'm starting to feel a need to go down there and have a look around.

Maybe Dakota will check in some time and let us know how many were sold back to the Dragonslayer last season. I attended on 5 different weekends and think they may have had about 3 total come through the shoppe. They usually don't last very long.

According to the MIL's collectors guide, http://www.trfcam.com/shops/trf/collectors/index.htm only 696 were made back in 1988 and 300 were broken in shipment. I imagine that this is why they are so valuable.
Another valuable TRF tankard that is next in line to the Dragon Tooth as far as resale value is the 1991 "Stained Glass Knight" which is now valued at $300.00 without a lid and $335.00 with a lid.

They were only produced in 1988 but have been traded and resold at Dragonslayer throughout the years. If there were only 396 left intact in 1988, you can imagine that many have been lost or broken over the past 20 years. In any event, there are less than 400 of them in the entire world so that's at least part of the reason why the price is so high.
I say "part of the reason" because I have another rare tankard, the 1998 "St. George and the Dragon" with gold highlights that was a production run of only 276. It was priced at $65 last year, but there were other variations of this tankard (plain, pewter lid, lid with finial). There was no lidded etc., versions of the Dragon Tooth.
Norberto
02-14-2008, 04:08 PM
They sound like "rare finds", if you consider the low production runs.
Do these actually filter through Dragonslayer from time to time?
Sir Martin
02-15-2008, 03:48 AM
Dragon Tooth tankards are sold back to the Dragonslayer and are made available immediately for resale. I don't know how many come through from year to year but it isn't a great amount. I've mentioned it before, but if you really want one my best advice is to save for it so you will have the money ready when you encounter one of them (or you can use a credit card if you purchase at Dragonslayer).

Excellent pictures, Nunya. Is that the hairline crack that extends down and to the left of the "n" in Dragon's? Or is it on the inside? If that is it extending from the n it looks more like a paint anomaly than a hairline.

I noticed the same thing. It's rather odd because the break / line does not extend through to the top. In other words, it doesn't look like it goes through the drinking edge or lip.

I noticed that as well when I was looking at these after I posted them. While I was taking the photos last night I was checking it to see if the crack was visible from the outside, but for some reason I couldn't see it. I'll have to take another look at it again tonight.

I took another look at your photos Nunya, and you really have a handsome Dragon Tooth. The colors are a little bit more vivid than on mine. The blue background and red in the "veins" on the dragon's wings are both darker on yours. Very nice coloring.

Thanks again, Sir Martin.
I took another look at it and yes that is the crack visible on the outside coming out of the "n" in "Dragon's". The white that you see on the lower part of "n" is a tiny chip. It's weird that I've never noticed the crack being visible on the outside until now. I guess it took the flash of a camera to make it show up. I also looked inside again and the crack seems to extend down about an inch and a half. I guess I was lucky I didn't bump into anything the day I bought it while I was drinking out of it and walking around TRF.

Regardless Nuny, it looks great.
I just wonder if it is possible to repair. Perhaps?
Maybe you need not use it. Great conversation piece and addition to your collection.
Sir Martin
02-16-2008, 09:21 PM
You do have a gorgeous tankard, Nunya. If the tiny white spot does not show up without using the flash from a camera, I don't think it is worth messing with. I suppose you could try to match up the yellow on the letter "n" and the blue but IMHO it would be more trouble than it's worth. I doubt if it's value is affected at all, considering the rarity of the piece and the demand for it.

Thanks again guys.
After I found out its value a few years ago, I stopped using it immediately. The chip is slightly visible, so I guess if I could find the right color of yellow (maybe a yellow Sharpie?) I could touch it up. Since it's such a small chip though, I'm thinking like you said Sir Martin that it's probably more trouble than it's worth. I think I will just leave it alone and put it back on the shelf.

If you ever decide to try to touch it up, please don't use a Sharpie or any of the other permanent markers! If you go over the line where the white is exposed you will be on the field of blue, and you know what yellow + blue makes.
If it were mine and I decided to try to touch it up, I'd go to a Michael's store or a Hobby Lobby and check out the craft paints (Anita's and FolkArt brands come to mind, but there are many others). So you don't have to take the tankard with you, get a few bottles that you think are close to the yellow on the Dragon Tooth (these paints, if I remember correctly, are about $2 - $3 each). When you get home you can determine which one is closest to the original color on your tankard, and return the others for a refund.
Use the smallest brush you can find (also at Michael's or Hobby Lobby), touch up the white area with the minimum amount of paint, probably less than a drop. If you go over the line, paint can be easily wiped off the blue background before it dries whereas permanent markers cannot.

02-17-2008, 03:14 PM
The chip is so small that I'm not really concerned with it. I agree, paint is a better idea than a Sharpie. I'm sure that with paint a person could find a closer color match as well. If I do decide to touch it up I will take your advise Sir Martin. For now, it's staying on the shelf.

As I understand it, most collectables that are repaired actually lose more value from the repair commited than the value lost through the damage itself. The exceptions being unique items such as paintings, etc.

As far as 1988 tankards go we do not have any at this time at Dragonslayer, but I am always on the lookout for one.
If any of you are looking for a specific tankard you can always contact me directly at Dakota@dragonsquest.com and I will promptly reply.
Thank you for your attention Sir Martin. Truly the most honorable way to acquire a TRF tankard is from the official source that is Dragonslayer.
Finally, in regards to trying to restore and paint your tankards, please before you do so if possible bring it to me at Dragonslayer. I have been doing restoration work for over 15 years and am willing to offer my advice or if necessary possibly services. I hope you all know I am here to help whenever I can.:D

No kidding!! The chip is so small that I'm not really concerned about it, but it would be an honor to let Dakota have a look. It would be a shame though if I were to stumble or drop it on the way in. Maybe I should throw caution to the wind and go for it.:)

Yeah, Nuny and I had across this some time back. At first, we thought it was a typo, but then the seller never corrected it. It's a actually a lidded '83, and the seller is crazy if he thinks he can get $670 for it.
A few weeks ago, a seller had a '91 Stained Glass Knight for a mere $95 "Buy it Now" price. I don't think the stein sold.

Oh I totally agree with you ... I was just reminded of what one of my friends (who is in sales) tells me ... people will buy anything! Just a wild guess, but the guy selling that tankard probably heard about someone finding a Dragon Tooth at at garage sale and making a big profit on it. It can happen, but he doesn't know that scenario doesn't work with the vast majority of TRF tankards. Maybe after a year or so he'll mark it down to $500. :D

Hey Bert - there was a little more to it than the colors. The 80/81, 82 and 83 were the same size and the lids on the lidded versions were identical. The logo of King Henry was the same on those years also, but the surrounding designs were very different. The handle on the 83 was also a slightly different design than on the 80/81 and 82.

Very true Martin, I forgot to point that out.
The 80/80 is darker brown with chariots.
The 82 has a unicorn and an elephant in a pretty shade of light blue.
The 83 is lighter brown with a flare/banner under the TRF logo.
These do seem to pop up for sale on a certain site quite frequently.

Those items are the most commonly mislabeled when put up for sale. I attribute it to the large TRF/King Henry logo on the front.

Oh no, don't misunderstand me; I'm all for making a profit. It's the free market that drives our economy. But only the person that pays that kind of price would be an even bigger idiot than the seller. Where's Darwin when you need him?
I'm always tempted to send these sellers a message to let them know how crazy they are for asking such a high price or to ask why they think it's so "very rare in market". (Especially the seller of the lidded '83.) I have yet to do it though.

"Very rare' just like the other 500 that were put up for action last week. The seller is obviously trying to generate excitement over their 100,000 of a kind product in the hopes that they can snag some poor newbie collector and fleece the bejesus out of them.

I think there's a quote credited to P.T. Barnum that fits here.

Send him a link to the current one for sale out of Honolulu with a starting bid of .99 cents. Even with the $15 for shipping to the mainland, it's better than the pilfering he is attempting.

If the seller is an honest person that has made an honest mistake in estimating the value, this might shame them into bringing their price down to a realistic level. On the other hand.....

There you go. And, hopefully it's lidded, but not full of beer! That would be mere alcohol abuse.

If the tankard is full, either drink or pour the beer into another drinking vessel and then hit the seller on the head.:D

Please do not use official TRF tankards for this activity (unless it's a 2000 or 2001).

I remember walking into the Dragonslayer in 2000 and going "Uhhhhh ... are those this year's issue"? The tankard wench ;) kinda rolled her eyes and said "yes m'lord, and you aren't the first one to make that inquiry". :D

Wow, that's sad.
As far as using a TRF tankard as a club, I believe that anything from about '80 to '83 would still be in one piece after whacking someone in the head with it.;)

No, a jack stand for your car. Or maybe a self defense weapon against Drunken Ferret style kung fu.

Yet two more great uses for a heavy early TRF tankard. A tankard used as a weapon against drunken ferret kung fu would be especially effective if it was full of brew. Your foe would just give up and say "For me?"

Hey, there's a mental image for you: a full grown person, wearing a ferret costume, performing kung fu while drunk.

Yeah, I know, right? With the prolifferation of technology these last few years you would have thought that someone would have put that on the net. You can find almost anything, and considering what some people will do for a few minutes fame, it's actually quite surprising that nobody has commited that particular feaux pax. People will video themselves in every imaginable humiliation, yet somehow this particular one has escaped their imagination. It's really quite surprising.
