Just figured i would drop a line to start a thread about audience participation, and how much it improves one's experience at TRF! I just visited the festival for my 5th time since 1989, but this was the first time i had been chosen out of a crowd to participate. Arsene picked me out of the crowd this past Saturday, i knew he did that every show, but this was my first time ever, and i had a blast with it! I picked back at him as he did me, and it just really was a wonderful experience to have been included in a part of a show. Quick word of advice, although everyone here probably already knows, go to have fun, don't have a chip on your shoulder, and if chosen to partcipate you will have a blast! Thanks again to Arsene and TRF for another memorable trip!...for those of you that may have been watching, i was the tall fat guy in the white shirt and tan cargo shorts, fun times!!!

it is fun to play with all the actors and shows!

the performance cast is all prepared to play with you, make eye contact and don't shy away! You'll have fun with any of the actors, if you want to play!

Part of the training and job of the performance cast is to involve patrons at faire. Some are pretty good at the improv!

Audience participation is one reason i really like Sholo's show at the sea devil. the romantic vs risque poetry is a hoot to watch. Would love to be one of the wenches picked out!

Last weekend, Dooble had big blocks out for little kids to play with alongside the Elves. Had a great time watching the kiddos ease into the game!

I also enjoy watching Kiva the Barbarian and her great huge horse Sampson. The trainer will help the kids pet Sampson and teach them good horse manners.

Actually, the interactions are the main reason I go to faire!

go ahead and pet that barbarian's rat, it will make you feel better!

Papa Elf and his young ward were AWESOME at interacting with us! It went off so wonderful that we actually had a crowd gathering and snapping pics and video, as if it were a scripted show!

Now I know this man is wonderful, and I have seen him take ANY role he is given and run with it over the years, but to actually interact with him... well, let's just say I am honored and feel privileged. His young ward was a very good actress and played her part VERY WELL.

I loved them both so much I gave them both one of my favors, and gave the young lady a bottle of faerie bubbles to play with. Jack Frost made snow for them to play with and we had a ball!

I was happy the crowd enjoyed the small show we did.

We will be back out there Celtic Christmas weekend to interact again.

Interacting with the cast is fun, and something I've only tried the past few years. As for shows, I've been pulled onto stage at TRF twice and at Excalibur twice.

Another time, it wasn't an official show, but the International Wenches Guild (IWG) held a public wenching when Tessa and I were at Bay Area Renaissance Festival (BARF) in Tampa last year, and I got snagged. The Queen at BARF, by the way, is a member of IWG. Here I am trying my best to fight the wenches off.

Couple of notes:

1) Glad to see the First Aid sign in the background
2) I see from the expression on your face you are looking to a higher power ( I would be also)

That is all I have to say about that

That's really cool that you got called on stage during the Arsene show, Chuck! He is a world-class performer and puts on one of the best shows, IMHO, that has ever graced a stage at TRF.

I thank thee both most graciously!

My character actually came to be last Celtic Christmas, but was short lived due to the abomination in weather we had last year. I love being and portraying faerie characters, and I started thinking, Celtic Christmas, faerie, chilly outside... THAT'S IT! I had never seen an Ice Faerie at TRF!

(My dress was made by my husband and also doubles as my garb for Dickins On The Strand) The wings were handmade by myself, Everything else has been added or changed along the way as the Ice Queen got a major upgrade this year. I needed her to look more humanoid, but not human of this realm.

From the compliments I have been receiving I think I have succeeded.

My son came up with the Jack Frost character based on the Ice Queen Faerie. It works except many people wonder why we don't speak while in character. It's very hard to explain in sign unless you have an interpreter with you, the human ear can not hear or understand faerie language. ;)

I have been asked several times to do the character every weekend, but I am a camper, with a tent and a simple camp set up. It takes me roughly 3 hours to get ready, as I must have help with quite a bit of it. And we have no shower facilities, no place to hang the dress, ect. It simply isn't feasable unless I can procure myself an RV.

If it were not for these drawbacks, and the expense of travel every week for 8 weeks, I would do it in a heartbeat.

We've actually encouraged participation and interaction with the cast. Every time we take a "fair virgin" we have had some form of initiation. For the guys it's usually one of the kissing wenches, or Granny Assayor. For the ladies, we've usually managed to have one of the cast flirt, present her with a rose or seranade her. I'm sure we've managed to supply a lot of lasting memories that wouldn't have been possible if the cast wasn't so GREAT!
