View Full Version : What Faires Are You Going To Attend This Year

I was just wondering what other Faires everyone would be attending (if any)
Right now it looks like we'll be attending these:
Scarlet's (indoors) - Oklahoma City, OK
Four Winds - Tyler, TX
Norman Faire - Norman, OK
Scarby - Waxahachie, TX
Oklahoma Ren Faire - Muskogee, OK
of course TRF
We have been discussing going to Bristol in WI, just gotta see what kind of $$$$ we can come up with. Now if a wild hare I mean hair pops up we may go to Kansas to 1 or 2 Faires there.
So, what's your calendar look like for the year?

Wow! That's a lot of faires! My plans aren't nearly so ambitious.
I'm hoping to attend Scarby for my first time this year and then I might check out this faire I heard of in a little town called Todd Mission.;)
Here's hoping all the faires you attend will be a blast.

My wife and I wanted to do Scarby one weekend and make TRF 2 weekends this year.
Scarby is looking bad since my niece is getting married during the Scarby weekends.
We will see what happens !!!!

Besides TRF, plans are kinda sketchy because it depends upon how repairs are coming along on the house (still waiting on contractor to do hurricane repairs). I'd like to go to Scarby early in the season. I'd also love to head back to Florida and go to FlaRF and BARF like we did a couple years ago. We'll see what happens ... I'll be glad if we don't get hit by another hurricane the rest of my life!

Lady Ellie - you can count me in for Four Winds. Went last year and the setting is marvelous. It's very small, but very friendly! An attempt will be made for Scarby, but a lot depends on family stuff going on. Our goal this year is to make all the faires in Texas, no matter how small. Quite a challenge!

Anyone hear of the Central Texas Renaissance Faire down around Austin? I think it use to be Excalibur. Someone on another board said they had been invited to Vend there for the 3 weeks in Feb. that they are open. hmmmmmm, need to check into that to see if it might be worth a 4-5 hr. drive.:)

I don't know much about it. It is located near Lockhart, so it might be on (or at least near) the site where Excalibur ran for it's last three years. Here is a link to their web site:

Next year, this is the one I want to check out. The owner/manager is putting a lot of effort into planning and I believe it will be a nice Springtime faire.

If you go to Scarborough, I can almost gurantee you will not be disappointed. I'll bet you have a great time. There is no ren faire larger than TRF, but if you enjoy that type of atmosphere, you can find something to like at almost any festival.
Although not as big as TRF, Scarby is still one of the larger fests in the nation and has an absolutely beautiful and charming grounds. You might even give some of the smaller faires a try. Some of them are quite fun.

Faires have a life of their own, and how we interact with it determines our response to the people, shows and vendors. TRF was the first and only Renaissance Festival I had attended for many years. After my home was damaged from Hurricane Rita, we stayed wtih a relative in Georgetown for awhile. Excalibur Fantasy Faire was not too far from her home, so we venture to their new location 3 years ago. The people were friendly, the acts performed as advertised. The Excalibur grounds were very spartan and probably looked more like a medieval forest than any other faire I had been too.
You will see several entertainers you know from TRF working at Scarby. Some may be using a different persona, but still put on a fine show in the new surroundings. You will also find nice folks from here, as well as from renaissancefestival.com at Scarby.
Many of the vendors also have shoppes at TRF, so they know how to take care of large crowds at fest, and enjoy recognizing their frinds from the Houston area.

I Agree With You Sir Martin
I Was Really Looking Forward To Going To Scarby I Wasn't Not Bored As Not All That Impressed
I Have Been Twice And Enjoyed It Better The 2nd Time I Had The Lay Of The Land Then ,the Setting Is Beautiful, A Beautiful English Village I Loved The Bridges
I Also Did Interact Wiith The Charactors Both Times And Enjoyed It But Sitting Back Watching The Passerbys , Which I Love To Do, There Was Not So Much Interacting With Kids,(no Mine Weren't There) , When Scarby Charactors Were Walking By (does That Make Sense)
I Saw Many Trf Charactors Both Times Which The First Time Shocked Me ,omg There Is Our King:d Second Time We Went I Was Looking For Everyone
As For The Vendors They Don't Always Have The Same Workers So I Was Able To Get What I Wanted At Trf With A Smile And Fun They Wanted To Be There , Same Stores Different Workers
We Are Going Back Just Not Thus Year As It Was Either Scarby Or Kings Feast We Voted For Kings Feast Lol
Sir Martin

I know what you mean about some of the vendors, Lady Lesley. Although I've had good experiences the two years I've attended Scarby, it is certainly possible to encounter a shoppe employee who is rude or apathetic. They usually don't last long. :)

I totally agree with everything said about Scarby. Its close to us but we don't consider it our home faire, if that makes sense. Its a beautiful setting, but we feel like some of the people could care less if you're there or not. We'll still got a few times in April, but come May, we'll be making tracks for Muskogee, OK. That feels more like home to us, its a smaller faire but the people are much friendlier and treat you like you are family. You will see some people you know/recognize from TRF and other faires. The price is better and there are alot of things happening on Saturday nights. I know I sound like an advertisement, but it never hurts to promote a faire.:p

At Scraby the first time I went in grab I was invited to join different playtron groups, asked to march in the parade, meet the king and queen, everyone was very friendly and inviting.
Going to TRF the first time I wasn't sure there was a cast no one came up to interact, everyone was pushing and seemed in a great hurry to go someplace secret they were not telling anyone else about.
I find Scraby very homy a place to relax enjoy people watching, hang with friends and have fun. TRF is still like going to the mall a place to shop watch a few shows that aren't up at Scraby but not a friendly place to hang out, that is what you do in the camp grounds not in the faire.
Wonder what makes the difference?

Scotbear, I agree with some of what you write but not everything. TRF is a large fair and it does take time to get to know people. Once, you get to know the TRF Rennies they are a great group of people. In my case I just made friends with the well known TRFers, such as RenGeek now Grim who had the RenRadio website. Grim new alot of people and he introduced me to them. I have to admit no one ran up to and asked me to join their playtron groups. However, with a little effort I made a lot of friends including the cast(both the King and Queen) and merchants. I think all Rennies have such a love of RenFaires it draws them together. I think the different is TRF is such a large fair with a lot of different types of people. Sometimes people in garb may not be as friendly as we would like in such a large crowd. I like both Scarby and TRF but TRF is my favorite. When it comes to people watching and relaxing just sit a the patio at Indulgences. Tell John the Cooper or Nick you know Lord Sutton and they will treat you right. Both John and Nick are members of this forum BTW I've meet even more people, since I joined this forum. I thank every one of you for being so friendly and making my October and November the best months of the year
Scotbear, look forward to meeting you at Scarby:)

I know many at TRF now after going years but it still feels much more hurried than Scraby. I have found it easier to meet people in the camp grounds than inside the faire itself. I know Grim from Scarby and many of the regulars at the sea devil now days. Just found it easier to meet people and join in at Scarby. Maybe its the size difference that makes the difference.
For me Scraby is home I can relax and kick back with friends. TRF is more for shopping, show watching even the sea devil feels more intense less relax than Lady Hawk at Scraby does.
Guess its the difference between the big city and small town. Some prefer one someone else perfers the other.
Don't get me wrong I enjoy TRF just as I enjoy a night out in Dallas, but its a special event Scarby is like going to my nieghborhood pub for a beer after work.
Sir Martin

I think everyone has good points, and it probably just comes down to what our personal experiences have been. I've attended TRF, Scarby, Excalibur, BARF and FlaRF. I've found something enjoyable about each of them. They each have their own personality.
We have all probably had good, as well as not-so-good encounters during our visits. Maybe one or two bad occurences left us feeling the fest we were at could have been a lot better. I was fortunate to be able to attend 5 weekends at TRF this past season and can remember only one person who was rude and inconsiderate (I checked with the shoppe owner the next week and was informed that the employee was no longer there). Still ... one short-lived bad experience in several weeks of attendance is not bad.
I've only been to Scarby on 4 days over the past couple years and it was all good. We just all have had different experiences ... we've been to different shoppes and encountered different people, but hopefully the good things have outweighed the bad and the overall experience is a nice one. I hope to enjoy our grand Texas faires for many years to come.

I agree with all faires have good and bad. Still believe one gets out of a faire what one is willing to put into it. I always have a blast at any of the ones i attend. HMMM, may hafta just attend 4 Winds this yr in Tyler, since ain't but 45 minutes away. You know, even the trip to faires can bring down one's experience. It is tiring ot drive down to TRF, but, if you take a deep breath i guess, and spend weeks prior in anticipation of it, the drive becomes a nonfactor. Just figured i would mention that i truly enjoy the fests that i have been to, both TRF and Scarby.

Thank you guys ... your thoughts and prayers mean a lot to us and I'll relay the message to her. She's had a couple petit mal seizures in the past week or so, and they are giving her some different medicine to treat it. The drawback is that there can be side effects and her doctors don't want her to be too far away from Houston for a couple months until we are sure she is handling it well. Things get complicated when you are taking lots of different medicines, but we all know it is better to have side effects than not to have a life at all. She's a real trooper, so we will just wait till she is feeling better and see if she is up to traveling and what faires are available at that time.

Found out that Arsenne is going to be at Scarborough for the opening weekend only. His show is on my must see list anytime I'm at TRF. It'll be great seeing him at Scarby even if only for the first weekend.
Anyone who wants to see Arsene should get there early ... since he is playing a limited engagement it will most certainly be standing room only. He really puts on a great show.

I'll bet that was fun. I've been pulled on stage a few times over the years, but not in front of an audience as big as Arsene's. It probably makes it a bit more challenging for a participant at his shows since he doesn't speak to you during the performance. :)

You will absolutely love Scarborough. It's not quite as big as TRF, but still large compared to most faires across the country. You will see many familiar entertainers, so be sure and check out the acts that you don't get to see at TRF. Take pictures to share with your friends on Dragon's Quest. :) Be sure to kiss someone you love on one of Scarby's romantic bridges. Try to go on one of the first 3 or 4 weekends. Scarby can get pretty hot towards the end of May.

Thanks for the Tips Sir Martin, I am not sure if I could Love it as much as TRF
But I would like to see other venues.... Plus I got my new Nikon D5000 for Christmas and I can't wait to Use It.... so I figured Scarborough would give me a good reason to get some practice before the season starts for TRF :)

Sounds like you got a great new camera! Scarby is a real treat, even for someone who has enjoyed TRF for many years. The grounds are not as level as at TRF, where you have mostly flat ground with slight slope down into Sherwood Forest where we have our only bridge (well ... there is a very small one also in the Magic Garden).
Scarby is located on kind of a rolling plain. There are a couple of creeks that run through the fairegrounds, and there are at least four bridges. One of them, The Misting Bridge, has misters that people love to walk through when the temps get really high. The other three bridges are larger (especially the troll bridge), and quite romantic with the lush trees surrounding them. I hope to get to visit again this year.

I think it is a Dry County..... and the only way they can get around that is to call themselves a Private Club and charge their patrons a membership fee. At least that is the way it is in some parts of Dallas.

Yep, you're right. This state is full of silly counties that try to keep their residents from drinking.
(makes for good business at all of the county line liquor stores in the adjacent wet counties though):D

I'm not sure if it's dry or not, but this is a way for them to avoid having to check IDs every time you go to buy drinks. The first time, they check your license (I think they run it through a scanner to make sure it's not fake). Then they give you a sticker that you can put on your mug or shirt. After that, you just have to show the sticker to get a drink. I think it makes the lines a little faster too.

I didn't know that either ... thanks for the link, Nuny. Come to think of it, Tessa and I went out to eat after attending Scarby and I remember the restaurant also served adult beverages. I think the "membership" thing at Scarby might just be a way to get people who have already show IDs in the express line at the pubs. ;)
