I'm am fairly new to East Texas. I came from Wichita, Kansas where they have a group called SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms) that offers weekly gatherings in medievil attire for various groups and subgroups. They also have a college that used to sponsor a yearly 'Ren Faire' (a much smaller version, I'm sure, of what the Texas Rennaissance Festival is) on their campus. The Ren Faires were moved to a large city park in recent years, though, probably to better handle the crowded parking situation.

Anyway, my main question is what are the medievil groups in East Texas? Most likely the closest group of any kind would be in Dallas. I wonder whether Merchant Price, Inc. is something like SCA. Also, is SCA a national thing or something I just ran across in Wichita? I was in the group only a short while because of having to go to second shift and because of having trouble coming up with a persona to be while in garb.

The SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) is an international organization that was started in the '60's.
Here's the URL for their web site.
http://www.sca.org/
The Merchant Prince is a business, a retailer, not a historical re-enactment group like the SCA and have nothing to do with the SCA.

There is even one very mobile branch of SCA, as it is stationed onboard one US Navey vessel. If it is still around.

Out of curiosity I looked around for that floating SCA group on sca.org, and couldn't find anything. they may have disbanded or maybe it was only a rumor.

Although not a member of the esteemed group, i used to live in Nacogdoches, deep East Texas (Stephan F. Austin State University) and while browsing around one year, I came across a group of SCA'ers there. Don't know if they exist now, but they were then about 9 years ago. (Don't think that they were students.
ON THE OTHER HAND, due to the cost of equipment but still being interested and not knowing much of SCA, i joined Amtgard (quit laughing) and had a blast. (especially for a 40 year old then) wish i knew more about sca then, i could've been a reev.
and i miss the battle mound too, i loved the full contact with the heavy weapons and the finesse of the rapiers.
