Could not decide whether to place this in the Food or the Entertainment section but here it is.
We have attended the Kings Feast the last 5 years and had a forking good time !!
My wife and I did notice that the show last year just was not the same without the old cast. Does anyone know why the major cast change?
Already have the tickets for this year’s trip, and looking forward to the great food, Sangria and the show.

I didn't attend the King's Feast, but was informed by several people (including a couple cast members) that the cast reductions over the past 3 to 4 years affected the King's Feast as well as stage acts and lane performers. There has been less music and other acts in the lanes the past few years and it has been noticeable. I know of one or two past performers who will be returning to TRF this year, so maybe this is being addressed.

I went to one of the very first Kings Feasts (I think it was '78 or '79) and had a fantastic time and even back then it was expensive, but the entertainment was non-stop. from everything I have heard, the show now isn't 1/4 of what it used to be.

Hey RHW . . where did they hold the King's Feast back then? Was it in the current location, or was it possibly back in the Sherwood Forest area? The reason I ask is that there is still some covered seating that is not generally used behind one of the food shoppes in the Italian Village. I think there is a sign that they can be rented for family reunions etc., but I saw them the first time I attended TRF in 1982. Someone told me they used to hold the King's Feast there but I'm not sure they were correct.

Yes, I beleive that's the place. I haven't been back there since, so I'm not exactly sure where you are speaking of. I know that the feast was in (what is now) Sherwood Forest; back then it was the Gypsy village.
Sir Martin

As you walk into Sherwood Forest, the area I'm referencing is all the way back and to the left. It is behind the Italian Village's pizza/sandwich shoppe. I just looked on last year's program and it is labeled "Royal Reunion". I guess they prepared the food back there for the King's Feast back in the 70's and early 80's. Some (or most) of the original covered seating is still there.

I can see by the map where you are referring to, and i was even in the Italian village last year, but I didn't go all the way back in there. I will have to make the trek to the back to see if it triggers any memories. Thanks for the heads up about it. Lots of years have passed since then. I definitly recall the event, sitting there eating, drinking and making merry. It was definitly a good time. :D

I envy you for being able to say you participated in that way back when. I'm really hoping that some folks will join the forum who might have pictures from the 70's or early 80's. I miss the Gypsy Wagon Stage. I believe it was just as you cross the bridge into Sherwood (over on the right side). They've replaced it with shoppes that do massages and sell incense etc.

I'm sorry that I didn't think of taking pictures back then. I would love to be able to look back and not just at my hazy memories, but at actual pictures that I could share with others.
In my earliest memories of Gypsy village there were no permanent buildings or structures, but only just tents. And the vendors would all just lay their wares out on blankets or rugs. I don't even recall the stage that you mention, Sir Martin. A few years later that whole area was turned into Sherwood Forest and where the Carillon & elephants are now, there was a stage where Robin Hood and the Merry Men performed the legend of Robin Hood. But now that is gone as well.

I have only been attending for the last 5 years. It would be great to see how the grounds have changed over the years. I have seen the picture that someone posted of the tree carved as a dragon and a knight; I could not recognize any of the foreground at all.

I just posted over in 'Other TRF collectables' about my poster collection and that I have the map from 1976. As soon as I can get that scanned in, I'll post it and you'll be able to see how the faire grounds have changed since 1976.

That would be great, if it does not scan well set it to high resolution. I have a lady that works for me that can probably adjust the colors to bring more of it out. It will change the appearance, but let you see more detail.
You might need to send it to me via email but we can probably work it out !!!

My scanner is playing up, but I'll figure something out. Also, as the poster is 17" x 22" (with printing on both sides), it will take several scans to get it all, then to assemble all of the pieces together for one big image. It's going to take me a couple of days. I'll get it done.

I have never done the King's Feast....I just cant gorge that much. I cant eat all that food or drink all that alcohol. I am a grazer....I like to nibble and snack my way thru the Renfest. I am also not a lush either so just two glasses of wine (mead) for me. :)
Besides I really enjoy visiting all the places and getting a little sample of this or that.

This will be my 7th or 8th feast on this year. I recently convinced the family to go. So this will be 3rd or 4th for them. The feast act has changed but it is still enjoyable. We noticed too that the act has changed from years past. I'm curious as to what is going on now. It's now the Pirate Feast hmmmm. I love it and will continue to go as long as they have it.

I don't have pictures from back then (before the age of digital cameras), but I do have a few programs from the early years. Since I don't see a method to post files on this forum, I haven't done so, plus I'm not sure about the copyright issue with scanning the documents and posting them. If someone from TRF could give an OFFICIAL policy releasing the scanned images, I'll be happy to post them for all to enjoy. (remember the chariot racing area?).

fair use. go ahead and post the images, just don't post them all. copyright issues say you can use images for personal use and not commercial use. I work with copyright almost everyday and have to watch it myself.
all you are doing is posting images for personal use, not for monetary gain.

I think I've told a version of this story in another thread, but I'll tell it again here.
One year at TRF (years ago) as I was just minding my own business resting under the shade of a tree, I was approached by one of the many TRF wenches. She said something like "I like a man with a beard!" and proceeded to grab me by the back of my head and rub my face all over her ample cleavage. After that I felt so violated that I had to go and purchase another beer.

She said the same thing and did the same thing ( probally the same winch ) ( I have a beard also )
When she let me up for air I just looked at her and smiled ( she ran away )
Then I had a beer, then sangria, then another sangria . . . .

I wasn't going to comment until someone mentioned the belly dancers. :) One thing that disappoints me is the lack of available light on the Castle Stage. Shunyata belly dance (as well as the Washing Well Wenches) are very difficult to photograph because this is the darkest of TRF's three major stages.

I noticed that last year as I caught the last moments of one of their shows. I guess the netting over the top kind of darkens the stage quite a bit.

Sir Martin,
I agree. I have taken pictures here, and I have had the same problem. Granted I am not the photographer as most would take seriously, but I noticed after I developed that this area was definitely darker due to the height of the backstage as well as the surroundings. My flash did not help either.
Also, there is quite the lush background as well as overhang creating somewhat of a dark environment alltogether.

Yes ... exactly the trouble I was having. Most flashes only work up to 15 - 20 feet, and you can be out of range on a large stage like this. The back of the stage is indeed high and dark, and, even though it is beautiful, not much light comes through that translucent multi-colored zodiac symbol over the stage. Still ... it's hard to complain because the shade is really nice on the sunny days.

That's true indeed, I forgot about that. There is a stained glass mosaic that sends light rays every which way, which also causes a problem for most cameras.
I had several bad shots of my second favorite type of dancers due to this very problem.

Hi Angie,
I will need to review the layout map posted in their site to exactly see where #23 is situated, but the Feast Hall layout is superb. Let me ease your mind a bit. I can honestly say that the room really doesn't have a bad spot. Naturally, some views are better than others, but the stage is set so high that everyone can clearly see and hear what is going on. There are large support beams that exist around the room, but even then you can position yourself around these.

It would be nice if The Merchant Prince would have pictures of past items on their web site, but they have only owned The King's Feast for about 10 years (and the Feast has been going on for almost 30 years). Unfortunately, they might not have pictures or info on items from the distant past. I wish they would because it would be great to see how the designs have changed over the years.
I know what you mean about the variations, though, because my friend who attends the feast has at least one of the goblet style and one of the tankard style. I have a mug (tankard) strap from Rev's Armour Werx that I really like. It goes around the handle of a tankard, but probably wouldn't fit around the base of the goblets. Take a look at the link below, and the mug and goblet straps are listed under Product Catalogue / Drinking Accessories.

Here you go Angie. I've already posted this photo in another thread here, but I thought I'd post it again for you here. Although I've never been to the King's Feast, I bought a couple like this one from a local antique shop. I also found in a different shop, a few of the later King's Feast goblet type vessels like Phil has described. The goblets were made of fairly thick aluminum or pewter and had emblems on them similar to the one on the tankard shown here. All of the ones I saw were really nice looking, heavy and seemed to be well made.
Have fun at the feast!!
This one is from 2000.

The Christoph show at the Feast Hall is a good idea. Iris and Rose do their "Trainwreck" show at The Sea Devil at 5:30, but it usually isn't over at 6. There are enough people wanting to see bawdy shows at the end of the day to populate both venues quite well.

Yes, Iris and Rose have a show back to back with Cristoph at the Sea Devil. I may be wrong about the time at the Feast Hall with Cristoph, but it is usually after the shows end at the Sea Devil. It may be at 6:30 or 7. He announces it at the Sea Devil show.

Iris and Rose have three shows back to back with Christoph, but they do the last one without him following. It probably works out best so that they do not overlap and he can do a solo gig at the Feast Hall. Smart thinking on management's part. There is still time for people to make it to the fireworks afterward.

I just checked and they do the same thing at Scarby ... Iris & Rose have 4 shows and Christoph has 3 on the same stage. Maybe Ottheinrich can tell us if he does a late afternoon show somewhere else on the grounds up there.

Ok, [head in hands] now I just feel a little more home sick. ;) :D

I haven't heard anything Philpot, but for the most part, the Merchant Prince does not publish or announce the specifics of exactly what the show will consist of. You'll have most of the big names come in for a quick short version of their acts/show. I&R, Cristophe, belly dancers ;), etc.

Have fun Ladies. I'm sure you will enjoy the great food as well as the entertainment.
Lady Lesley, if you are attending Nov 16th at 11am, wear something warm. At times, it could be cooler in the mornings and warm up later in the afternoon, but the Feast Hall can be a fridge during cool weather. I have noticed it is quite cool during warm/hot days, but it is very chilly during the colder days. Combination of wooden building and tumbled granite floors most probably contribute to this.

A shawl is an excellent idea m' Lady.
Yes, there is a seating map/chart on the texrenfest.com site under Kings Feast, then Seating Chart. Find your seat# there, and that will give you an idea of where you are situated in the Hall. Also, do not be discouraged by the seating chart if your seat# does not look to be pleasing or practical. The Hall is organized in a way where everyone can enjoy the show and share the private and pampered experience.

Yes, you can take pictures of the people and the performance in the Feast Hall. I haven't actually *seen* any yet, but I talked with one of the Merchant Prince employees last year and it is allowed. Who knows ... maybe people are enjoying the show so much they don't think about it.
Sir Martin
08-25-2008, 01:21 PM
I just called The Merchant Prince to clarify a few things. A nice lady there verified that it is perfectly OK to take photos in the Feast Hall.
Several performers will make their way through the hall on a regular basis, but the Duchess Spendalot and her companions are the main characters in the show. Do expect to see gypsies and The Pirates at some, if not all performances.
The Feast Hall is not air conditioned. Although I've never attended a King's Feast, I walked back into the Feast Hall on a hot day last year with one of the Merchant Prince employees. It was very cool compared to the outside temperature. I believe the youg lady said The Feast Hall has 6 cooling fans and an exhaust fan that lower the temperature significantly. POW next door has A/C, so maybe that is where the confusion came in.
They have been using a souvenir mug made of ceramic for the past several years. These mugs are hand-made by a potter who has a shoppe at TRF.

To Sir Martin's point, it is very easy to get caught up in the show that you do not have the time to pick up the camera during peak moments persay. Remember, you will always have your goblet full of your drink of choice, your plate will always have food from their 5 course meal, and you will make sure you do not miss any of the rules the Feast host has warned about.
I will not ruin the Kings Feast by telling you now, but I assure you, pay attention!! You do not want to be one of the unlucky souls! :D

Sounds like The King's Feast is a tad more civilized than the way they do it at other feasting events. I went to Medieval Times a few years ago and they served the food without utensils. Of course, New Market Village is set in the 16th century and Medieval Times is a few hundred years before that. :)

Once I've had enough beer, I pretty much start walking erect and act way more civilized. Of course if I get too much beer, I've been told that I revert back to my regular Neanderthal self.;)
That means no. We're going to get kicked out! Never mind.

That means no. We're going to get kicked out! Never mind.
It would be a very special occasion, so I'm pretty sure I could pull it off. There's usually a few warning signs (drooling, growling, walking around on knuckles, etc.) before I revert back to my feral self anyway, so if anyone happened to notice, I could probably be dragged out of there before anything terrible happened.
