Fedora Core 6 on VPS

So the better part of today has been spent trying to upgrade the VPS to 5.3 PHP. This process required upgrading mySQL. This has taken a lot longer than hoped!!!

The issue I have with the Linux community is standardization. The reason why Microsoft and Apple still are leaders in the desktop space is that dependancies for system files and cross-linking is mostly taken care of by the developers of the software by incorporating the necessary files into their installer packages. Linux has tried with RPM, YUM, YaST, etc. but still fail in my opinion.

Sure, Windows and Mac's have their issues, but I am currently on a Mac (read my other post) because I don't have to dig into the covers.

Needless to say, I will no longer recommend a VPS solution for anyone. When the provider locks you into a specific release of kernel and won't provide the necessary files to do simple upgrades to core functions, this is not what everyone signed up for when VPS systems where introduced. For the headache, I would rather have a dedicated machine that I could have serial access to the console of the physical machine, boot by network file location, install whichever distribution I wanted, and be done with it!
